Punasa Parish came into existence formally in 1994. It was a substation of Sanawad Parish with several tribal Catholic villages. Fr. Nicholas Jez SVD, then parish priest of Sanawad, initiated the mission activities in this area from 1980. Though the Barela Catholics from Barwani and Chikliya parishes had already settled in Pamakhedi and the neighbouring villages, Late Fr. Alvares, then parish priest of Sanawad, took keen interest in mission work in these areas as the catholic population was well known to him, and played an active role in promoting the catholic population of Punasa. Later on 12th July 1993 the Augustinian Sisters opened an English medium School at Narmada Nagar. The Present Parish Church was built in 1996 and Fr. Kuriakose Parackal was appointed the first parish priest.
