Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales from Vishakapattanam initiated their mission activities in 1866 in and around Khandwa and slowly expanded the evangelical work to the other parts of the Nimar district. Rev. Fr. J. Thevenet MSFS built a Church at Khandwa in 1880. The first residential priest was Fr. Adolphe Souchen MSFS (1882-1888). Since then many zealous missionaries whose hard work and devout life blessed Khandwa Mission. Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery was invited by Rt. Rev. Charles Felix Pelvat MSFS (Bishop of Nagpur) to begin education apostolate at Khandwa in 1892. Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) arrived at Khandwa and began an orphanage for girls in 1940.
The Parish Church at Khandwa was declared as Cathedral with the erection of new Diocese in 1977. The present Cathedral was constructed and blessed in 2002 during the episcopacy of His Grace Leo Cornelio SVD. The construction work was supervised by Late Rev. Fr. John Thayil.
