Until 1975 Chanera remained an outstation of Khandwa Parish. It was elevated to the status of a parish on 1st July 1975. Rev. Fr. Xavier Valayathil became the first Parish Priest. The Sisters of St. Anne’s of Thiruchirappalli joined the parish community in 1981.
