EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Education is the second oldest, first being pastoral, apostolate in the Nimar Mission. Educational activities began in the year 1892 with the establishment of the first mission school in Khandwa by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chamberry. History of missionary activities in the region indicates that village apostolate activities in the initial years were predominantly limited to educational programmes for the village children. Franciscan Missionary Brothers, who initiated their work with non-Christians in the region, established 15 village schools during 1901-1902 as part of their village apostolate. Village schools established by the missionaries impressed the villagers who appealed for their intervention in more and more villages. There is ample evidence to suggest that missionary activities centered predominantly around educational activities at least in the first fifty years of the presence of Church in Nimar region.
In 2019-20, more than 40,000 children were enrolled in 40 Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the four civil districts of the diocese of Khandwa.
